Hudson River Snapshot Day

As part of the New York Hudson River Snapshot Day, Parker 2/3 and 6/7 classes go to the river to help collect data that will be used by DEC to monitor the Hudson.  The students rotate through numerous stations, including  observational drawing. This year they used viewfinders to focus in on a particular area to draw. The big challenge this day was the rain that wet their papers while they worked!

4/5s Draw Gourds

In celebration of this amazing fall season the 4/5s practiced their observational drawing skills by capturing the unusual shapes and bumps in several colorful gourds.

K/1s Learn About Jasper Johns

After looking at some examples of pop artist, Jasper Johns' s letter and number paintings, the K/1s covered 18"x 24" paper with their own letters and numbers in tempera paint. After this dries, they paint the negative space with watercolors, filling the background with color.

4/5 Name Designs

The 4/5s also created monochromatic locker identification art. Their monochromatic cursive names are backed by black and white geometric designs. The students began by creating a stencil of their name, then traced that onto a bordered paper upon which they developed an eye-catching black and white design. This will assist with the which is whose in the halls.

2/3s Draw and Paint Shadows

On a beautiful fall afternoon the 2/3s trekked over to the butterfly garden to capture shadows on large white paper. Back in the classroom, these now abstract designs will be painted with warm and cool colors.

2/3 Observe and Draw Shells

The 2/3s were excited to observe the extraordinary detail in an assortment of sea shells. After examining many different shells, they each picked a couple to draw using colored pencils.
